Enthusing + Convincing
Nikol studied landscape architecture at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. She graduated on the Grensmaas project for which she received the first prize of the Archiprix competition in 1997. From 1990 until 1997 she was employed at the municipality of Amsterdam where she created development and policy plans for public spaces.
Nikol has worked at H+N+S since 1997 where she developed into a senior landscape architect. At the end of 2011 she joined the H+N+S management team. She works on projects that throw light upon different aspects of the profession, among others garden and park designs, master plans for urban development locations, landscape visions, regional plans and infrastructural projects. In the past years she also focussed on projects in the field of (sustainable) energy and energy transition.
Apart from her work at H+N+S, Nikol is guest lecturer at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam and at Wageningen University. Until the end of 2010 she sat on the Amsterdam city development board. Now and then she is a member of a competition jury (among others Archiprix, Gouden Piramide) and she also takes part in competitions. In 2001 she won the Prix de Rome.
Nikol's focus
GREEN CITIES
Nikol works on projects that turn cities into greener places. Sometimes this involves the enhancement of existing green areas, such as the development plans for Arnhem Estate. But more often green areas are added to the city. Examples are the Rijnstate hospital garden (Arnhem), the new Belle Vue Park and Amaliapark in Leidsche Rijn. With the same intention she works on master plans, for example, for the Wagenwerkplaats as the home base for H+N+S and Green Park Aalsmeer.
INTEGRATION OF LARGE-SCALE INFRASTRUCTURE
The integration of large-scale infrastructure into the landscape is Nikol’s second focus. She worked, for example, on the route determination and integration of the N69 provincial road in Brabant and on the integrative vision of the N31 motorway around Leeuwarden, which resulted in a landscape plan for West Leeuwarden and development plans for the villages Ritsumasyl, Deinum and Marssum. Recently she participated in a tender for the Hoevelaken junction and in the integration of the western link in Amersfoort.
SUSTAINABLE ENERGY AND LANDSCAPE
Nikol has a special interest in contributing to the sustainable energy resources theme. She contributed to the ‘Landscape and energy, designing transition’ book publication and is often involved in design projects focussed on energy transition. Examples are the spatial vision wind energy E40 zone (Belgium) and the future perspective for space and energy for the province of South-Holland. Currently, she is working on the Energyline project.
