Build + Grow
From 1976 until 1990 Lodewijk was employed as a landscape architect at the Dutch Forestry Commission and as a senior landscape architect/deputy head of the landscape architecture department of the Forestry and Landscape Planning board (Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation). Together with Dick Hamhuis and Dirk Sijmons he founded H+N+S Landscape architects in 1990. He retired as director in 2015 and since then he has worked for the firm as an advisor.
Lodewijk wants to work at the forefront of the profession. In many of his projects he is searching for solutions for new problems and known questions are interpreted innovatively.
In order to achieve the former one needs to go deeply into the functioning of objects or sectors. Lodewijk was one of the inventors of Plan Ooievaar; an innovative plan on nature and water preservation of the river banks of our main rivers.
DESIGN AND PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Lodewijk’s work is for the greater part project related; he predominantly works in a supervisor or project leader role. His fields of expertise are regional landscape planning and landscape architectural conceptualisation. Many projects are on the interface of water and land planning on both a national/regional level as well as on a development level.
In the past years, from 2010 onwards, Lodewijk made various contributions to the Delta programme and he was more and more involved in the implementation of large dry and wet infrastructure projects.
SECONDARY ACTIVITIES
Lodewijk regularly supervises graduate landscape architecture students.
LODEWIJK’S FOCUS
WATER & SPACE
Because of his extensive experience and knowledge on water management in the Netherlands, Lodewijk knows, as a landscape architect, how to reinterpret the existing implementation practice and to deliver innovative solutions. In the past years Lodewijk managed the following projects: Future perspectives for the IJssel Vecht Delta, the MIRT study multi-layer safety for the island of Marken, the Integrative vision Houtribdijk and the Spatial quality guidelines Gorinchem-Waardenburg. In the metropolitan region of Istanbul, Turkey, he worked on the area development for the Riva basin.
NATURE & SPACE
Lodewijk applies the following vision: understanding natural processes and consequently using them in designs to solve conflicts with other users and improve ecological qualities. From this vision he lead projects such as Nature and recreation in symbiosis, Redevelopment Hollandse Hout and on Vlieland he worked on several projects commissioned by the municipality and the Dutch Forestry Commission.
EXECUTIONAL DESIGN
The combination of extensive design experience with large-scale multiple design issues and a focus on carefully elaborated designs forms a good basis for a coordinating architect dealing with complex implementation projects. In this capacity he worked on the implementation of the Room for the river Waal project in Nijmegen and as of 2016 on the area development for Ooijen-Wanssum, both commissioned by the Dura-Vermeer Ploegam consortium.
