Marijne Beenhakker

Landscape architect

Marijne studied landscape architecture at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam from 2009 until 2015. Before this period and after graduating at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2003 she has worked as an artist. After having worked at various companies in the field of landscape architecture: Buro Lubbers, province of North Holland and la4sale, Marijne has worked as a landscape architect at H+N+S landscape architects since 2015.

With the combination of landscape architecture and art academy as a background, Marijne is able to look at the landscape with a poetic view. Making the layers or stories in a landscape tangible is an important motivation. The animation she made for her graduation about the history of the Flevopolder is a product of this. Marijne is good at portraying plans with attractive, clear maps. She has her own style of making maps by combining digital and hand drawn elements. Landscape ecology has her special interest: nature is a great source of inspiration and the awareness of nature as a system in which we intervene is important to her.

Marijne's focus

RECREATION AND NATURE

The ‘Nature and recreational value for the Hollandse Hout’ project is a proposal to strengthen the relationship between the Oostvaardersplassen and Hollandse Hout by creating more openness, extension of the length of the ecological forest edge, and more wet environmental conditions within the forest area by creating a creek. A smart excavation strategy is the financial engine for the nature development project. Besides nature, the intervention also adds experiential value and makes the forest interesting for visitors all the way from the Randstad.

SPECIAL HERITAGE / LANDSCAPING

Projects in the field of special heritage fit a poetic view on things. At the same time, the costs of managing heritage are nowadays difficult to achieve. This adds importance to a pragmatic approach. The Hollands Buiten project is an extensive vision of the future of country estates in the province of Zuid-Holland, both spatially and economically. The smaller scale project ‘Horssen estate’ is a fine example of revitalising a neglected country estate combined with providing living space for the elderly. The 'Hoogerlust Gardens' is a design for an allotment complex on a care estate near Muiden. Various functions are combined on the estate around the monumental Vechthoeve. The spatial design connects the various program components, which led to an interesting place with regional significance.

ENERGY AND SPACE

Together with Stichting Probos, Marijne was part of the H+N+S team that supervised the workshops on Biomass cultivation as a challenge for spatial design. A publication by Probos was published in August 2016. Marijne's contribution was to implement recreational and ecological values next to technical and financial conditions. She made drawings as the result of the work sessions. Later a Masterclass Functional Landscape followed in collaboration with ZLTO. For the Municipality of Den Bosch, Marijne worked on an exploratory study into the possibilities for landscape integration of new energy sources, including solar energy and wind turbines.

INTEGRATION OF LARGE-SCALE INFRASTRUCTURE

The ‘ViA15 landscape plan’ is a large-scale and complex project involving different parties and interests. The challenge was to achieve a coherent whole that served all parties as much as possible. Tender design 'Sluis Eefde' is a rich plan in which the construction of a new lock is used to give shape to the lock complex as a spatial and functional high-quality whole. Tender design Zeesluis Terneuzen shows how a new lock can be a beautiful addition to Terneuzen's public space: an attractive link between the city and the outskirts.
